The European Commission will finance 10 Erasmus Mundus stipends for applicants coming from any third country (category A), and 7 stipends for applicants coming from EEA (category B).

Applicant students from Switzerland, Turkey and the Western Balkans region (i.e. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo under UNSC Resolution 1244/99, FYRoM, Montenegro and Serbia), who are not resident nor have carried out their main activity (studies, training or work) in EU member state, EFTA and EEA state  for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years will be eligible for a Category A student scholarship. If this is not the case, they are eligible for a Category B student scholarship.

The European Commission also imposes the following additional selection criterion, which aims at ensuring a geographical balance across the sponsored students: * no more than 2 students by the same nationality.
